Using our second chances

Thursday, October 4, 2018
11:00 am - 1:00 pm

As we power forward with our careers, juggling the demands of family, community and work, it is not often that we get the opportunity to examine what is possible for our “second act” in life.

What comes after the fast pace of building a career? What might show up when the career is no longer challenging. Sheila Grinell is a wonderful example of taking all of the gifts of “the previous” in order to create the opportunities for something quite different–and fun!

Sheila served as the CEO and team lead that opened the Arizona Science Center and later welcomed nearly 400,000 visitors each year. As her career moved along with success after success, she was faced with the decline and death of her mother. While sitting with her mother, she would tell stories about her mother.  Her mother thought they were delightful stories and after time came to respond to them as if they were about someone else. So Sheila decided to write her mother’s stories, added in some personal experienciences of her own to create some of the characters and gave birth to her second act career as a fiction writer. She has now moved from her school of science and leadership to the “school of story-telling” with her debut novel Appetitie, published in 2016 and her second novel scheduled to be released next year.

“If you’ve ever contemplated leaving a job and starting something completely new, you’ve probably also thought about all the good reasons not to. Even so, there may be benefit in forging straight ahead.”

–Sheila Grinell, novelist and former CEO of the Arizona Science Center

Our October Leadership development meeting will look at how learning constantly could take place with a career move at any age.
